Flower Consultation Tips

For many engaged couples, their wedding is the biggest party they will most likely host. Planning for the big day takes time and research to ensure their vision is reached. With flowers being the second most photographed (next to the bride, of course), they are an effective way to set the mood or theme for any wedding.

Here are some helpful tips when planning for flowers:
  • Knowing when and where the wedding and reception are going to be is essential. This will help gauge what types of flowers are in season.
  • The colors of your wedding is also very important because it will help narrow down the vast variety of flowers available to use.
  • Have an idea of where you would like to see flowers at your event.
  • Finally, it is important to have an idea of how much you would like to spend. The Knot explains how to set your budget on flower decor.

What to expect from Mokara Floral Design:

  • It is suggested to meet between 3-6 months before the big day.
  • A consultation will take between 30-45 minutes.
  • Bringing photos or have a Pinterest board of anything related to the wedding is a great way for the designer to understand the look you want to achieve.
  • Afterwards, you will receive a copy of your floral quote with a description and price of what will be created for your wedding.

Vintage Mason Jar Blue and Wheat Wedding

The Happiest Bride on the Block wedding photos have arrived, and we couldn't be more thrilled to show them off!  Below are some of our favorites, but check out the rest here. Katie's vintage inspired bouquet included spray roses, roses, poppies, celosia, succulents, astilbe, bouvardia, and lisianthus. All of the varieties together create a textured timeless look!  Her something old, borrowed and blue was a gorgeous broach from her grandmother.  What a wonderful way to include family heirlooms or items that are special.

Baby Blue and Natural White Wedding

This beautiful Spring wedding was filled a love of baby blue and crisp white .  Using blue hydrangea peeking through a compact rose bouquet worked perfectly with Cara and her bridesmaids blue strapless dresses.  A single standard rose creates a classic boutonniere for Jared.

Vendor Spotlight

This was posted a while back from the Happiest Bride on the Block contest, BUT... I couldn't resist to share their endearing words with you.

Jen and Amy (Best Day Ever) couldn't have said it better, so with that said...

Ashley Hack, owner of Mokara Floral Design, is a true florist. She doesn't just like working with flowers, she doesn't just dabble in botany, and she certainly isn't just a little knowledgeable about gardening. It's like she talks to flowers and they speak back, no more like they GAB back and let her know all about who and what they will look good with. So Amy and Jenn of HBotB asked Ashley about her secret, and simply replies, "Flowers just make me happy! I really like the power that flowers can have."Anyone familiar with her work would then assume that just matching her level of excitment and enthusiasm would give you the same skills, but like any good bloom, her success and brilliance came with time and effort.

London's Olympics

Have you seen the metal ceremonies of the Olympic games?  You may have noticed the gorgeous bouquets each metal winner is holding.   Jane Packer's  Victory Bouquet is an elegant, fragrant, and colorful compliment to the gold, silver or bronze.   I love the idea of color blocking, as I mentioned in my interview for the "Happiest Bride on the Block" contest.  Let's see this floral trend take off next season, OK Cincinnati brides? :)

The bouquet was designed by their creative director, Susan Lapworth, to reflect the vibrancy and energy of the London 2012 Games.
It consists of four different types of roses sectioned into quadrants to mirror the 2012 logo. The roses being used are Illios (yellow), Marie Claire (orange), Wimbledon (green) and Aqua (pink).
The quadrants are then separated by English lavender, rosemary, apple mint and wheat which also provide a lovely fragrance.

Happiest Bride on the Block

Congratulations to Katie and Kyle!  It was a perfect day for a wedding in Mount Adams.   Here is a sneak peek of their wedding:

Katie's bouquet included beautiful white polo roses, vendela roses, white astilbe, poppy pods, green celosia, lady's mantle, and spray roses.  The broach was a family heirloom that was pinned to her handle as her something old and blue.  A fabulous idea that not only helps pull out the vintage look of the bouquet, but a personal touch to those who weren't able to share the day.

Inside their program read: “Katie and Kyle would like to thank all their friends and family for their help in making this day possible by helping the two of them win this amazing opportunity. Without all of your help, this day would not be possible. They would also like to thank all the wonderful vendors who have donated all of their services and products. They have made this into their dream wedding, and have graciously given so much. Love Katie and Kyle.”

Best Wishes to the happy couple!

Peony Pink and Ivory Wedding

Congratulations to Lucy and Bryan!  The happy couple exchanged vows at the historic St. Francis Church in Oldenburg, IN.  Soft pink peonies complimented the elegant, quiet, and naturally gorgeous bride. The bouquets included pink peonies, white hydrangea, wax flower, brunia berries, lambs ear, lisianthus, and pink and ivory spray roses.  The boutonniere is of ivory spray roses, wax flower, and brunia berries.  A special thank you to Ron Shuller's Creative Images Photography for capturing such stunning photos.

Persimmon, Hot Pink, and Purple Wedding

This colorful wedding was full of life!  The bouquets were an perfect compliment to the bridesmaids beautiful aubergine dresses.  Janelle's vision included a vibrant display of flowers with different textures.  She was instantly drawn to the purples in hydrangea next to vibrant pinks in wax flower and roses.  The flowers sang, and Janelle looked stunning!

Almond, Beige, and Mocha Tropical Wedding

Patrick and Ebone's wedding (held at the Manor House in Mason) conveyed style and classic elegance.  The tropical touches of banana leaves lining the aisle and looped ti leaves in the bouquets nodded to the Haitian background of the groom.  Pale chocolate cymbidium orchids blended in beautifully with the hydrangea and soft pink vendella roses. Ebone's idea of a vibrant reception juxtaposed from the monochrome ceremony was a gorgeous display of her modern style, and will go down as one of my favorite weddings!

Modern Eggplant, Sapphire, and Chartreuse Wedding

Purple hydrangea, purple lisianthus, red roses, purple vanda orchids

Erin and Jason had such an amazing wedding last October. The Belle Event Centre, where both the ceremony and reception were held, was transformed into a modern elegant purple celebration.  The candles and lighting created a dramatic backdrop for the bride and her flowers. All of Erin's planning and hard work paid off, as this is easily one of my favorites of the season! A special thank you to Amanda Donaho for capturing such fantastic photos.

Michael and Holly's "old Hollywood" meets gangster themed wedding was a creative and elegant way to start their marriage.  Congratulations to the happy couple!

Red Garden Roses

The mirror, crystals, and votives surrounding the grouping of red garden roses not only creates more color throughout the room, but an illusion of more flowers than were actually used.  This is a great way to save for bigger ticket items, as in the taller centerpieces including pricey feathers for a dramatic look.
